today i drew a castle.... and why not...
when i was in england i remember spending hours just looking at castles. how much work went into them. the work of the hands of a thousand men...more even.
it would be a nicer thought if they weren't mostly built under pain of death... but i'd like to think they were built out of voluntary cooperation for the interests of everyone.
more research on my end perhaps.

i've been feeling that overwhelming sense of busyness day in and day out. no matter what i do or put my attention to, there's always something else that's being neglected.
i need the hands of a thousand men.

i tried my hand at bob's style. took about 20 minutes to come up with my version. not spot on, but this was my first time. the video helped a bit to understand his technique. i watched the twice before hand and then had at my attempt without further help from the video. i only referenced the final product to try and understand the shapes he used.

definitely something worth dabbling in. give it a shot.

x-men and the vietnam war

i spent my final hour of the evening watching cartoons.

while watching them, i couldn't help but be reminded of draft board raids during the latter part of the vietnam war in the 70's (when most americans had grown very weary of a war that had no tangible purpose or foreseeable end...sound familiar?).

a draft board raid was the sabotage of united states draft office. the purpose was to interrupt the process through which tens of thousands of young american men were being drafted and sent to fight in vietnam. it was also held quite a bit of symbolism, as many of them were public.

they were carried out by activists who not only believed that the united states draft was unjust, but also that it perpetuated injustice. they held the belief (as i do) that when a law perpetuates injustice, it is necessary to break that law. these thoughts never crossed my mind when i was 9 years old.

i wont go into full detail, but watch these cartoons and then rent the camden 28.

How to Plan Printing. published in 1987 by S.D. Warren Company, a subsidiary of Scott Paper Company, which you may be more familiar with.

found this gem at a local used bookstore. they guy at the counter didn't seem to understand my interest in the material.
"how to plan printing? isn't that what kinko's is for?"
i didn't respond. after reading this review of the shop at yelp.com, i understand his tone a bit more.

81 pages. it covers design, production, typesetting, legibility, printing, binding and finishing, and paper. while some of it is outdated, it's refreshing and satisfying to keep these things a consideration.

i'm noticing now (while writing this) that the inside cover notes the paper stock used. the text stock is Lustro Dull, 80 pound. cover stock is Kivar 3-12 Graphic White Antique. i believe i'll be using kivar in the near future.

i'm pleased.

photos from last week. on saturday i ended up riding to O.B. from hillcrest. had a burrito (bean, cheese, guac, fries) at nico's.

anyone remember quailman? you know, doug funny's alter ego. at anyrate, in a particular episode, quailman had to go toe to toe with ruelmeister. ruelmeister's diabolical plan was to speed up the rotation of the earth so as to eliminate saturday and sunday. in the end, quailman defeated ruelmeister and the evil deed was reversed by slowing down the rotation of the earth to add the 3rd weekend day: funday.

i could really use that 8th day...

alright, get this. locked up in the mountains of montana a company called freeman transport has come up with this beaut. a steel track frame that breaks into two and can be reattached together with a single tool. this isn't one of those bulky hinged folding commuter bikes. smooth as butter and efficient as all get out. uses s and s couplings and comes with a carrying bag . take this bad boy on plane with you.

i just found out that ines brunn will be coming to san diego critical mass tomorrow. if you ride a bike and don't know who she is, you need to get your game together.

ines brunn is world renowned for her artistic ballet like bicycle tricks. she hails from germany.

while her bike is a fixed gear, this'll be her first track bike ride (velo culture is building her a track bike to ride after her performance) as well as her first critical mass. pretty wild.

i forgot my camera at work last weekend, so i was unable to capture alot of madness that took place. this is my attempt to make up for it.

monday night - i went for a ride with daniel, brandon, and kristin. our plan was to go to an art show, but by the time we arrived it was closed. so we had pizza, i bought a nantucket nectar for a guy named kennedy, and we sampled gelato.

tuesday night - daniel, russell, and i took some of our high school friends to an arcade. i nearly reached a sensory overload.

finished the night with return of the five deadly venoms.wednesday - had an awful burrito for lunch. but managed to get some free pants from active thanks to my boy jon.

wednesday night - worked on my touring bike (forgot to take a photo). bought a soma woodie multi-tool from mission hills bike shop. those guys are way too cool in that shop. daniel came over and we went for a short ride to meet up with alicia and rachel at a a frozen yogurt joint in hillcrest. we then rode to the zoo. daniel fell off his bike twice on our way home... don't ask me how - i don't know.
11 tools in 1. not too bad. plus it looks tight. though, i'm pretty sure if i ever have to use the chain breaker i'll be swearing under my breath. it's kind of awkward to handle.

first off, velocity has managed to make me fall in love with some sort of metallic eggplant colour. genius. if katie doesnt get these, i certainly am.

second off, level has gone ahead and reinvented the fixed gear hub. three screws and you're set apparently. no lockring involved. i would think if the screws ever came a little loose it would destroy that cog pretty quickly...but i'm hope they thought this through before introducing it to the market.

Only in Zambia, do you find little girls as young as 2 wearing hair weaves that make them look like “Muppets” characters
Only in Zambia, do a group of young boys steal from you, and then you have to pay to transport them to the police
Only in Zambia do your friends tell you they’ll make you a cake for your going away party, if you pay them for it
Only in Zambia, because you’re leaving, does every single person you’ve ever met tell you that you need to give them a “remembrance” gift, forgetting that the deal goes two ways
Only in Zambia, when you teach health, do villagers ask you to pay them a “sitting allowance”
Only in Zambia, do twenty women come knocking at the window by your bedroom door at 2am, while drumming, wanting you to come out and dance by the moonlight
Only in Zambia, with your girlfriends, for fun, do you wash clothes and draw water from the spring
Only in Zambia, do you find a girl getting water from the spring while wearing a shirt, unknowingly, that says “I’d rather be shopping”
Only in Zambia, does every girl your age have at least 1 child, is married, and is a domestic housewife only (do I not relate to women my age or what? )
Only in Zambia, does every third man propose to you and say he will pay many cows to marry you
Only in Zambia, do you find yourself sitting on an overloaded bus traveling from Lusaka to your village, only to have suitcases come falling down, hitting your nose, and bloodying it
Only in Zambia, does a vehicle, once picking you up from town, never leave directly after. It must first pack the vehicle until people can’t exhale, then load everything from soybeans to bikes to chickens ontop of the car, until we can barely move we’re so overloaded, only to be stopped soon after by the road development agency
Only in Zambia, do mothers feed their one year olds cokes and lollipops (choking-nah!)
Only in Zambia, do mothers dress a baby in 3 layers of full body head to toe sweater sets on 98 degree days, not noticing the sweat beads accumulating on the child’s forehead
Only in Zambia, will you travel on a vehicle with a box in the middle of it, later to find out it’s a coffin with a dead person in it (MARCUS!)
Only in Zambia, are the mice bionic, chewing through suitcases, tupperware, bathing suits, and mosquito nets- somehow living through even eating poison as well
Only in Zambia will you find a grandpa cycling faster than you while carrying his wife, his grandson, and then asking you to pick him up and carry you with him, which he does, somehow
On in Zambia, do people who live on less than $1 a day singing and smiling all day long

today i'm sick, but yesterday was great.

i met up with brad around 1:00 in the after noon at the fountain in balboa park.

i stuffed 3/4ths of a burrito before he got there, and ended up wishing that i had only stuffed half..

the day consisted of a dumpster tour of north park, university heights, hillcrest, normal heights, kensington, and south park.

in the end the score was a bagel, wasabi peas, gummy dinosaurs, dried mango slices (my favourite), and flour covered bread.

brad's been suffering from some kind of mucus infestation of his nasal cavity

nothing but leafy greens were found...

kensington, philadelphia - kensington is well-known throughout the region and the entire nation for being one of Philadelphia's poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods. Despite some recent revitalization, drug sales and frequent shootings continue to plague the area.

kensington, san diego - this upscale enclave on the southeast rim of mission valley is picturesque, with attractive (and pricey) spanish-styled homes for upwardly mobile yuppies. it's a peaceful pocket amid the hubbub of the inner city. there's a tiny business district along the single main artery adams ave.

i like my friends here. it doesn't take much to convince people to go out and do something fun.

we rode home at 1am....it was even colder. i lost pressure in my back tire, so climbing hills became even less enjoyable, if thats even possible.

i think we're doing a san diego sight seeing ride tomorrow / dumpster food scavenger hunt.
